The first full-length compact disc recording by the musicians of the Ohio State Symphonic Band celebrates the music of American composer Andrew Boysen, Jr. Boysen is director of bands at the University of New Hampshire, and has a catalog of more than 100 works for winds and percussion that have been performed across our country and throughout the world. Boysen is known for his thoughtful, expressive and creative exploration of musical source material throughout his compositions.

A project deeply collaborative by design, the project spanned the course of an entire academic year, and involved the musicians of Symphonic Band, Women’s Glee Club, Men’s Glee Club, and two graduate vocal soloists; graphic design work by Arts and Sciences Communications; and recording engineering and mastering in our Music, Media and Enterprise program. Material used in the final version of the recording came from live performances during the academic year and five short recording sessions mounted during weekly rehearsals – requiring no additional time of students beyond regular rehearsals.

“The experience of recording is an important one for our students,” remarked Dr. Scott A. Jones, conductor of the Symphonic Band. “The ways in which the students embraced this project – a first for the ensemble and nearly every musician involved – and honored the spirit of each composition was very inspiring.
