Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Singing Health

Introduction

The Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Singing Health at The Ohio State University offers advanced professional training in voice disorders, vocal health maintenance, and pedagogical applications of voice science. The Specialization equips professionals from Speech and Hearing Science and Medicine with an understanding of the needs of singers; and it equips singers and other professional voice users with tools and knowledge to preserve vocal health and support doctors, therapists and teachers who work with professional voice users.

The Specialization is an invaluable resource for the medical, academic and scientific communities in dealing with voice care, maintenance and training for a wide variety of professional voice users including singers, actors, teachers and public speakers.

Graduate-Level Training in Singing Health

The Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Singing Health is a 16–17 minimum credit hour curriculum beyond the master's degree; it can fulfill a portion of the requirements for the Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance [pdf] or the PhD in Speech and Hearing Science. Courses are drawn from the School of Music, the Department of Speech and Hearing Science, and the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. The program requires clinical, pedagogical and surgical observations as well as work in acoustics, anatomy, and comparative vocal pedagogy.

The program of study [pdf] includes detailed information about course offerings.

The faculty encourage students to present research at the bi-annual Ohio State Voice Forum and in other venues. The program also hosts workshops and seminars for students, voice care professionals and the general public.

Admission

The Specialization is small and selective to maximize individual training, mentorship and experience. Interested applicants must be admitted to a graduate program in Voice, in Speech and Hearing Science, or another coordinating degree program (e.g. Medicine, Athletic Training) at The Ohio State University. Interested applicants should complete the statement of interest form [pdf] and submit it to Dr. Katherine Rohrer (rohrer.66@osu.edu)].
