Winner of eight Tony Awards and now an opera house standard, this American masterpiece has been compared with Alban Berg's Wozzeck and Britten's Peter Grimes as it follows the eponymous character's deadly descent into vengeful obsession. This darkly comic and electrifying musical thriller, called a "black operetta" by the composer himself, is Sondheim's most complex and challenging score. Accompanied by the Ohio State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Russel C. Mikkelson.
Jim Lovensheimer, associate professor of music at Vanderbilt University, will present pre-show lectures 45 minutes prior to each performance.
