Spring Session 2025 — January 6–May 7

Private Lessons 

The Community Music School offers both 30- and 60-minute private lessons on a variety of instruments.* Lessons include a comprehensive mix of repertoire, technique, music theory, musicianship, and creative work suitable for the participant’s level.

Session Finale Recital

A Finale Recital will be held on Wednesday, May 7 from 3–9 p.m. Times will vary based on instrument. Details will be shared closer to the date. 


Spring Session Offerings

  • Students in Grade K — Adult: Cello, Guitar, Percussion, Piano, Ukulele, Violin, Voice
  • Students in Grade 5 — Adult: Bassoon, Clarinet, Composition, Double Bass, English Horn, Euphonium/Tuba, Flute, French Horn, Oboe, Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet
  • Students in Grade 9 — Adult: Conducting, Marching Band Fundamentals, Mellophone, Reed Making

Locations

  • Timashev Family Music Building, 1900 College Rd., Columbus 43210 — Directions and Parking
  • African American and African Studies Community Extension Center (AAAS CEC), 905 Mt. Vernon Ave., Columbus, 43203. Parking is available in the front and back of the building.

Not all instruments are available at every location. The CMS Manager will provide options when scheduling.

Lesson Times

Private lesson day/time/location will be arranged by the Community Music School Manager at the instructor and participant's convenience after receipt of registration and tuition payment. Registration and payment must be completed before a participant can attend lessons. 

Lesson cancellation policy — If a participant needs to miss a lesson, they must notify the instructor 24 hours in advance. Last-minute cancellations PRIOR to the lesson are accepted only for participant illness and family emergencies.

Class cancellation policy — In a weather emergency, the class will occur online and will not be made up in-person or refunded.

Teachers do not handle registration fees or forms, so make sure you are in communication with the Community Music School Manager


Tuition

30-minute Private Lessons

  • Single student per household: $400 ($25/lesson) + $30 administrative fee = $430
  • Multiple students in the same household: $400 per student ($25/lesson) + $50 administration fee per family (not per student). 
        •    NOTE: Families with multiple students, note that the $50 fee will be a separate product when you pay online with a credit card. 

60-minute Private Lessons

  • Single student per household: $800 ($50/lesson) + $30 administration fee = $830
  • Multiple students in the same household: $800 per student ($50/lesson) + $50 administration fee per family (not per student).
        •    NOTE: Families with multiple students, note that the $50 fee will be a separate product when you pay online with a credit card. 

Interested in Financial Aid

 

What is the administrative fee?  Administrative fees cover the cost of administration, registration, instructor background checks, recital costs, etc. Charging this fee, including the discounted version for families with multiple student enrolled, allows us to set the per lesson fee at a competitive market rate. 


Registration

DEADLINE: Sunday, December 29, 2024

STEP 1 — Complete and submit the online registration form. If you feel you qualify and are interested in applying for Financial Aid, indicate this on your registration form. 

Spring Session registration will open here on December 2.

STEP 2 — If you indicate interest in Financial Aid on your registration, you will be provided with an application. DO NOT proceed to STEP 3 (tuition payment) until you receive confirmation of aid.

STEP 3 — Submit payment.

To pay online with a credit card (preferred), use the link provided in your registration confirmation OR use the link below.

Shortly after submitting payment, you will receive an email confirming the transaction.

The payment link will be available here on December 2.

NOTE — The payment form works best on a computer (PC or Mac).
MAC USERS — use Chrome, not Safari.

To pay by check:

Make check payable to The Ohio State University. Print "CMS Private Lessons" on the memo line.

Pay the tuition per student, plus the applicable administrative fee ($30/single student from one household OR $50/family with multiple students)

What's Next?

During the week prior to Spring Session, participants will receive a confirmation email with instructions for the first lesson.
